When children tend to act out behaviorally it is usually their way of expressing that something is wrong with them or their family. Typically, children have difficulty making sense of and verbalizing their emotions. A change in academic performance, anger, withdrawal or somatic complaints can be a cry for help.
We work collaboratively with the family, school and pediatrician to understand the child’s struggle. Our therapists may use such things as art, crafts, walking or video games to help the child connect, communicate and understand their own thoughts, feelings and behaviors.
Therapy typically begins with an initial session with the parents and child. The next two sessions are spent with the child alone, as long as the child is comfortable. The fourth session provides feedback for the parents and the development of a treatment plan. Typically Family Therapy will also be incorporated into treatment.
